Hemostatic Forceps & Clamps

Hemostatic forceps, also called hemostats or artery forceps, clamp blood vessels to control bleeding during surgery. They have ring handles, serrated jaws and a ratchet lock that keeps the clamp closed without hand pressure. Hemostats are among the most used tools in any OR, and Grey Medical makes them in every common pattern as part of our forceps and clamps range.

How Hemostats Are Used

Surgeons clamp a bleeding vessel, then tie or cauterize it before releasing the jaws. Hemostats are also used to hold sutures, grasp tissue and blunt-dissect tissue planes. Jaw length, serration pattern and teeth decide which hemostat suits which job.

Types of Hemostatic Forceps

  • Mosquito Forceps: Halsted, Hartmann and Skillman Mosquito patterns for small vessels, with or without teeth.
  • Kelly and Crile Forceps: medium hemostats; Kelly jaws are serrated on the distal half, Crile jaws are fully serrated. Crile Delicate is also available.
  • Pean and Rochester-Pean Forceps: larger clamps for heavier tissue and pedicles.
  • Ochsner and Rochester-Ochsner Forceps: with 1×2 teeth for a firm grip on tough tissue.
  • Carmalt, Rankin and Rankin-Kelly Forceps: for pedicles in hysterectomy and abdominal work.
  • Thoracic and Vascular Clamps: Schnidt, Sarot Intra-Thoracic Artery, Lejeune Thoracic, Thoracic Artery and Vanderbilt Vessel forceps.
  • Other Patterns: Adson, Bengolea, Bridge, Collier, Dandy, Jones, Lahey Traction, Lawrence, Mayo-Pean, Providence Hospital and Serrefines Cross-Action.
