Sponge Forceps

Sponge forceps, also called sponge holding forceps or ring forceps, are long, ring-handled instruments with oval, fenestrated jaws. They hold gauze sponges for prepping skin, absorbing blood and swabbing deep cavities, and they can also grasp delicate tissue. Grey Medical offers sponge forceps in surgical-grade stainless steel within our forceps and clamps range.

Uses of Sponge Forceps

  • Applying antiseptic solution to the skin before an incision.
  • Holding a folded sponge to absorb blood and fluid in deep wounds.
  • Grasping tissue, such as the cervix in gynecological procedures, without crushing it.
  • Removing retained products or debris in obstetric and gynecological care.

Types of Sponge Forceps at Grey Medical

  • Foerster Sponge Forceps: the most widely used pattern, available with straight or curved jaws and smooth or serrated jaw surfaces.
  • Ballenger Sponge Forceps: a longer, slimmer design that reaches into narrow and deep cavities.

Key Features

  • Fenestrated oval jaws that hold sponges securely.
  • Ratchet lock to keep the sponge in place without hand pressure.
  • Long shafts that keep the hand clear of the surgical field.
  • Surgical-grade stainless steel for repeated sterilization.
